In Nungwi, the coastal town where our Zanzibari hotel is based, over half of Year 4 primary students fail to achieve even the lowest grade in any subject. Grade E is considered good, D is excellent, and C is almost unheard of. No one achieves an A or B.

This isn’t due to a lack of ability or ambition - it’s the system that holds these children back. But with the right support, we can change that.

We identify students who manage to score any grade, and bring them into our own classroom for a year of focused learning. If they pass the entrance exam for the area's only private school - where academic standards are significantly higher - we fund their education through to graduation.

In return, these students join our Sustainability Champions programme. Each week, they take part in extra lessons focused on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. They also engage in real-world projects, share their knowledge with others, and commit to becoming responsible global citizens. Whether they become civil servants or future leaders, our aim is to nurture a generation dedicated to building a more sustainable and equitable world.
